Op 9 oktober kreeg ik onderstaande mail:
Hi André,
I’m reaching out because Boundless Chapters Club is currently choosing the 12 books for our Literary Spotlights Reading Challenge, which will run from September 2026 through September 2027. I was part of the team looking through titles for the next round, and De geluksverdeling came across our radar. I wanted to reach out personally because there was enough about the book to make us think it could be a genuine fit for what we’re putting together.
What caught our attention was Daniël, a man whose success seems to have given him everything except peace of mind, leading him to write a book in an attempt to understand how happiness is distributed among people. The way that connects with ambition, existential uncertainty, dark humour, and the strange gap between having a successful life and actually feeling fulfilled is particularly interesting because it speaks to something our readers are actively looking for in philosophical fiction, contemporary literary fiction, and stories that question our assumptions about success. It wasn’t simply that the book explored happiness. There was something about making a seemingly successful person the one unable to stop questioning it that made us want to look at it more closely.
The Literary Spotlights Reading Challenge is built around giving selected books focused attention among readers, but we also look beyond the reading experience itself. For books that are featured, we work through the library and distribution channels available to us to explore appropriate institutional opportunities based on the book’s genre, subject, audience, and where that audience is actually served. For De geluksverdeling, our research points toward public-library and university collections focused on contemporary Dutch literature, philosophy, existential fiction, and European literary studies in the Netherlands and Belgium, with possible relevance in France and the United Kingdom because its questions about happiness, ambition, and the meaning of a successful life connect naturally with wider philosophical and literary traditions. Zavelreis also creates an interesting companion pathway for readers who discover your work through questions of time, mortality, melancholy, and the possibility of finding love and renewal along the way. We also have our Q4 Book Feast coming up in December, where books that show strong engagement can be brought into the wider feature, with no additional fee to the author.
There were a few things about De geluksverdeling that made us feel it was worth reaching out rather than simply moving on to the next title. I would be happy to show you what we noticed, explain how the Literary Spotlight works, and walk you through how the reader and library sides connect for a book like yours. Would you be open to hearing a little more about how it works?
Warm regards,
Harthy Benson

En hoe weet little miss Harthy waar mijn roman over gaat?
Bovendien: met de zin ‘Zavelreis also creates an interesting companion pathway for readers who discover your work through questions of time, mortality, melancholy, and the possibility of finding love and renewal along the way.’ valt mevrouw Benson wel door de mand, want dat is zo’n dooddoener; zo’n zin kan slaan op zowat elke dichtbundel.
Enigszins duister besluit ze haar mail met: ‘I would be happy to show you what we noticed, explain how the Literary Spotlight works, and walk you through how the reader and library sides connect for a book like yours. Would you be open to hearing a little more about how it works?
Maar what’s in it for me?
